Arduino Final Project Proposal

The Social Interrupter

The Social Interrupter is a disguise tool and a necessary addition to the arsenal of any and all first-time vigilantes and aspiring ne’er-do-wells. Housed within a hooded sweatshirt, it is a face mask designed to not only disguise the wearer’s appearance, but also their voice. A microphone within the mask captures any sound made by the user and distorts it, hiding the user’s true voice. This is taken a step farther by the placement of a bright LED light in the center of the mask. The light is activated by a button within the edge of the mask and syncs its brightness to the volume of your voice. When desired, simply shout or blow into the mic to create a blinding glare, guaranteed to silhouette your face. The light even creates lens flares when filmed, deterring identification in photographs. The Social Interrupter draws inspiration from a long history of vigilantism ranging from illegal street art to hacker culture to social activism. The ever-growing presence of public surveillance breeds paranoia and makes it increasingly more difficult to challenge deep-rooted regimes. This discourages change in public opinion and encourages a homogenization of human culture. Fear of persecution, both physically and socially, makes people hesitant to stand up for what they believe in. When a civilization removes the ability to dissent, that civilization begins to stagnate. While one may not be able combat surveillance in every aspect of their life, there are ways to secure an individual’s personal identity should they decide to fight.
